In partnership with Coffs Harbour Regional Landcare, the OzFish Coffs Harbour chapter got together on a rainy afternoon to repair a local wetland to support native fish. Activities on the day included the removal of environmental weeds, the planting of 150 native trees and the removal of invasive mosquito fish using trapping nets.

OzFish Unlimited has restored 3 hectares of the riparian zone along the Nymboida River following the devastating 2019-2020 Black summer bush fires that burnt throughout the system. Removal of privet, lantana and other exotic weeds has been undertaken to reduce competition with native plants. Following this, community planting day event will see volunteers’ plant 1000 native trees and shrubs.

OzFish and Landcare investigated reported sightings of the Australian Lungfish in Rocky Creek Dam. OzFish Richmond River Chapter undertook eDNA sampling to determine the presence or absence of Lungfish in the creek, taught local volunteers how to undertake waterbug sampling and how to capture baited underwater remote video footage.

Lake Macquarie’s delicate saltmarsh communities have faced threats due to coastal development and land reclamation. This development has resulted in significant losses, impacting the fishery. In response, OzFish Unlimited’s Lake Macquarie Chapter set up the Styles Point Saltmarsh Restoration and Clean-Up Project.

Through the Caboolture and Maroochy community’s combined actions, native fish habitat continues to be protected and restored within Queensland. Restoration included improvements of in-stream habitat, saltmarsh monitoring a unique shellfish reef trial and and riparian and wetland rehabilitation.
The end goal is to enhance fish abundance and diversity. Collaborative efforts like these will safeguard the well-being of aquatic ecosystems, native fish, and overall ecological balance.

OzFish alongside Northern Slopes Landcare, Traditional Owners, recreational fishers and Moree Urban Landcare worked to rehabilitate Moree’s fish habitats on the Gwydir River. Using the River Repair Bus program based at Moree, OzFish led restoration works across three sites surrounding the community of Moree and the Gwydir River.

OzFish Unlimited worked to support a number of eel-tailed freshwater catfish thanks to a project with the Deniliquin Kolety Lagoons Landcare Group, Joint Indigenous Group, NSW DPI Fisheries, Murray Local Land Services, Edward Wakool Anglers Association, and the Edward Kolety Fishing Challenge.

OzFish Unlimited worked to support native fish in the Darling River, thanks to a productive carp muster day. OzFish Unlimited, NSW DPI Fisheries and Landcare NSW ran a free fishing event at Menindee, NSW. This community based event featured prizes, raffles, and a free lunch for those who registered to protect our waterways from the ravages of this invasive species.

Wambuul Macquarie River, NSW 2021/23

OzFish has removed invasive weeds from a section of the Wambuul Macquarie River near Buckhobble to improve water quality and healthy habitat for native fish and wildlife. OzFish worked alongside private landholders, community members, and key contractors to improve a 2km degraded section of the Wambuul Macquarie River. The project has been funded by the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust and BCF – Boating, Camping, Fishing.
