River Repair Bus delivers restoration

Volunteers hopped on board OzFish’s Dubbo River Repair Bus to deliver a range of restoration works along a 2km degraded section of the Wambuul Macquarie River. The main focus was the removal of invasive weeds and their replacement with native vegetation better suited and beneficial to the local environment.

The principal weed removed was willow, regarded as a weed of national significance due to how widespread and destructive it is. Willows reduce flows and accessibility, as well as contributing to flooding and erosion, and remove a lot of water from the soil that deprives it to native vegetation. Volunteers then planted more than 240 native trees and shrubs to create a natural and healthy riparian zone along the river.

That native vegetation will deliver significant benefits, including reducing erosion, filtering run-off from entering the waterway, improving the water quality, and providing shelter and shade for native fish, turtles, rakali and platypus.
