Revitalising fish habitat in Lake Eppalock

Now, if you’re anything like me, you know there’s nothing quite like the thrill of casting your line into those pristine waters, hoping for the catch of a lifetime. One of my favourite spots to fish is Lake Eppalock, it was where I caught my first fish and had some amazing memories with family and friends.

OzFish recently partnered with Goulburn Murray Water and North Central Catchment Authority to transform the underwater ecosystem of Point King Bay at Lake Eppalock. This spot, beloved by anglers and nature lovers alike, is getting a major makeover.

The project is getting worked on by some very good blokes who have strategically placed 40 log and rootball structures, tailor-made to be the ultimate hangout spot for native fish. Think – the legendary Murray cod and the elusive trophy yellowbelly.

But here’s where it gets really interesting. Instead of just plopping those logs in the water and calling it a day, OzFish staff and volunteers and their partners are using some seriously cool techniques.

The team combined large logs and root balls with sturdy metal chains, sending them down a zipline to anchor at strategic locations where the underwater landscape lacked vital habitat.

It’s like playing architect for the fish, creating cozy hideaways where they can kick back and relax. This method not only provides a more technical and precise approach to conservation but also brings a host of benefits to native fish, such as offering shelter from predators, boosting reproduction through more breeding sites, enriching food sources, and enhancing water quality.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I’m already itching to grab my rod and reel and head out there. And get this – as if boosting the fish population wasn’t cool enough, this whole project is also going to make fishing even better for us anglers.

Because if there is more habitat there’s going to be more fish. Think more spots to hook that big one, cleaner water, and just an all-around better experience on the water.

And the best part? They’re not just setting it and forgetting it. Nope, OzFish will be keeping a close eye on things with fancy fish finders and teaming up with local angling clubs to make sure we’re all getting the most out of this new aquatic playground.

Now, let me tell you, this isn’t just about hooking the big ones. Sure, it’s gonna make our Aussie fish population happier than ever, but it’s also about us anglers banding together and making a real difference.

Think about it – by spreading the word and showing folks the wonders of these woody habitats, we’re not just casting lines, we’re casting a legacy.

I don’t know about you but I’m not giving up on natives, it’s made me proud to be involved in projects that will be here for future generations to enjoy.
