UNEP reported in 2005 that entanglement and ingestion are the primary types of direct damage to wildlife caused by marine litter; it can smother seabeds and it is a source of toxic substances in the marine environment. Microplastics ingested by fish is a quickly emerging issue, with plastic pieces commonly found in the stomachs of many types of fish. It has been suggested that plastics accumulating inside the fish hamper their ability to buoyancy control, cause internal ulcerations, partial blockages of digestive tract and impair the satiation signal resulting in starvation. Further studies are being conducted into plastic toxicity to fish, but it is likely that liver toxicity is a common result of plastic chemicals ingested.
