National Threatened Species Day – our role as OzFishers

National Threatened Species Day takes place on 7 September each year.

It’s fair to say this day is becoming more important each year as the need to address the challenges facing Australia’s native animals, plants and ecosystems becomes ever more pressing.

At OzFish, as Australia’s recreational fishing conservation charity, we understand the vital role habitat restoration has to play in revitalising healthy habitats for our fish. Our objective is better habitat for better fishing, but we are also working on threatened habitats that are home to many other fish species which we don’t fish.

Threatened fish and aquatic vegetation, have faced a diverse range of pressures, including habitat loss, barriers to passage, pollution and competition with invasive species.

This is why our volunteers are delivering works to restore what was lost and monitor what is happening.

Some projects we are working on include:

Our work also helps to raise awareness of the key issues facing Australia’s threatened species and provides volunteers and local communities with the education and skills to play a direct role in positive change.

We’re scaling that work up and achieving that through collaborating with other like-minded groups, including our partnership with Landcare NSW and at a national level with National Landcare Network. By working together, we can achieve so much more.

At OzFish we are incredibly proud of the threatened species recovery efforts undertaken by so many of our OzFishers.
