Victorian habitat heroes set to roll up and get dirty

It’s been all systems go for our volunteers in Victoria as 2023 gets underway. They are hard at work rolling up their sleeves across multiple projects in Westernport, planting over 1500 across two sites, near Rhyll and along the Hastings foreshore. These will not only provide juvenile fish with a safe space to live and feed before they head into deeper waters but also help to protect the coastline against extreme weather events and reduce soil erosion

Seagrass restoration scales up in South Australia thanks to volunteers

Seagrass restoration scales up in South Australia thanks to volunteers

The restoration of South Australia’s vitally important seagrass meadows is a step closer after the incredible efforts of our recreational fishers and local communities. Across both of our ‘Seeds for Snapper’ projects in South Australia, along Adelaide’s metropolitan coastline and on the Fleurieu Peninsula, more than 700 local rec fishers and people got involved. Together, they dedicated more than 3,380 volunteer hours to harvest and deploy more than 18,700 seagrass seeds in over 630 biodegradable sandbags.

In an incredible moment for habitat restoration – we delivered our biggest single day yet this week when our volunteers deployed more than one million recycled oyster shells into Moreton Bay, Queensland. More than 200 members and supporters dedicated over 2,900 hours to collect, clean, and deploy in excess of 16.5 tonnes of oyster shells. Thank you.

Across three working bees, 28 rec fisher volunteers constructed 70 Robust Oyster Buckets (ROBs) and filled them with more than 1.1 tonnes of recycled oyster shell. They then helped to deploy them at strategic locations in the Port River estuary, dedicating more than 188 hours so far to delivering the project.

We did it – one million seagrass seeds deployed in Cockburn Sound this seagrass season!

Thank you to all of the recreational fishers, volunteer divers and boaters, school students, and local businesses who came together to make this year our biggest Seeds for Snapper yet.

More than 400 volunteers played a part in helping achieve the lofty goal of dispersing one million seeds in a single season. Their efforts are helping to return this lost habitat to the WA coastline.

Seeds for Snapper makes strong start for 2022 in WA

Our ‘Seeds for Snapper’ initiative – the largest seagrass restoration initiative in Australia has got off to a strong start for its fifth year in Cockburn Sound, Western Australia.

It only got underway last week but an army of volunteers has already collected more than 400,000 seagrass fruits. Unlike other restoration approaches, Seeds for Snapper mobilises rec fishers and the wider community to help restore their own backyard.
