Kyogle’s Battle Against the Invaders

This past weekend, the Kyogle community, in partnership with OzFish and Kyogle Landcare, came together for an exceptional event dubbed the ‘Kyogle Carp Out’.

Over 70 enthusiastic anglers of all ages and abilities gathered at the Kyogle Amphitheatre, armed with their fishing gear, ready to make a difference in the local ecosystem by targeting one of its most notorious invaders: the carp.

The event was not only about fishing but also about raising awareness of the environmental challenges posed by carp in Fawcett’s Creek, a tributary feeding into the Richmond River catchment. This area has been hit hard by a combination of natural disasters and has the unfortunate title of the river with the worst water quality in New South Wales. However, the passion and commitment of the community to revive this crucial waterway were palpable throughout the day.

The ‘Kyogle Carp Out’ event was a prime example of what can be achieved when organizations and communities come together. Thanks to the Driving Fish Habitat Action partnership between OzFish and Landcare NSW, and with the generous support from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts and BCF – Boating, Camping, Fishing, the day was set to be a milestone in local conservation efforts.

Ryan Lungu, OzFish Program Manager for NSW Coastal Habitats, emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating, “Carp are a major concern in the Richmond River catchment, and this was our chance to combat the issue head-on. The collaboration exemplifies the power of community action supported by our partnership and the NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts.

One of the event’s highlights was its focus on sustainability and education. Participants were guided by fishing experts to learn the most effective methods for removing carp, contributing significantly to the restoration of Fawcett’s Creek. Moreover, in a nod to environmental responsibility, the carp removed during the event were repurposed into local compost systems, showcasing a thoughtful approach to waste.

The day concluded with a community celebration, featuring a BBQ lunch and the distribution of prizes from BCF, acknowledging the hard work and dedication of all the volunteers. It was a moment of reflection on the impact of collective action and the difference it can make in our environment

The success of the Kyogle Carp Muster is a beacon of hope for the revival of the Richmond River catchment and a testament to the power of community-led conservation efforts. It demonstrates the significant impact we can have when we come together for a common cause, equipped with the knowledge and tools to make a difference.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated, our partners, and our sponsors for making this event possible. Your efforts have not only helped in the battle against invasive species but have also contributed to the larger goal of restoring our native fish populations and their habitats.
