Tangle Bins initiative helps to keep Northern Territory fishing spots clean

High-traffic fishing spots around Darwin and Palmerston lakes are getting a helping hand with the installation of Tangle Bins to keep these areas free of stray fishing gear.

In a first for the Northern Territory, OzFish Unlimited, Australia’s fishing conservation charity, is proud to announce these tangle bins are being set up in designated areas where recreational fishers like to wet a line.

OzFish will recycle discarded line and other fishing tackle as part of its ongoing commitment to protecting our aquatic environments and marine life, and facilitating improved stewardship in the fishing community.

In collaboration with the Amateur Fishermen’s Association NT (AFANT) and with funding from the NT Recreational Fishing Grants Scheme, OzFish will be working with the fishing community to deliver this exciting program.

AFANT is the peak representative body for recreational fishers in the Northern Territory, with a mission to ensure the quality of the sport and ensure there is “great fishing, for everyone, always”.

The puprose-built Tangle Bins will provide fishing waste disposal infrastructure at eight locations, increasing the drive for recreational fishers and the wider community to pick up and dispose of used fishing line, hooks and bait packaging, that could otherwise end up in our waterways.

This is a model that has been rolled out successfully in other states with positive results.

Recreational fishing is the Territory’s top pastime with growing participation across diverse sections of the community.

While the vast majority of fishers take pride in making sure that rubbish associated with their fishing is disposed of, these bins make it easier than ever, with the added bonus of the potential to recycle those items into new products.

OzFish recognises that real change requires community involvement. Volunteers are needed to help monitor and maintain the Tangle Bins, ensuring that they remain effective in keeping our waters clean and safe for all to enjoy.

Ruby Hatfield, OzFish’s Northern Territory Project Officer, is enthusiastic about the impact that his initiative can have in the area.

“We’re not just tackling litter, we’re helping to ensure a sustainable future for recreational fishing,” she said.

“By installing tangle bins and recycling fishing materials, we’re making a positive impact on the environment while engaging the community in responsible fishing practices.

“We encourage everyone to join us in this vital mission by volunteering their time and expertise.”

AFANT CEO David Ciaravolo added that his organisation was pleased to partner with OzFish on this unique project.

“Most fishers see themselves as stewards of our environment, so we look forward to working with OzFish on this exciting initiative and will be actively promoting opportunities for fishers to get involved,” he said.

This project is a collaboration between OzFish Unlimited and the Amateur Fishermen’s Association NT (AFANT), with funding from the NT Recreational Fishing Grants Scheme, and support from BCF – Boating, Camping, Fishing.
