Why making time for fishing is important

Do you often pass on the opportunity to go fishing because you don’t have time? Busy period at work, the kids have sport, your favourite show is on? Well at OzFish, we want to remind you why making time for fishing is important, for you and your family.

As a busy working Mum with two kids, Cass, our Director of Habitat Programs, loves a fishing mini trip. It doesn’t have to be long, it doesn’t have to be chasing mega fish, it just has to be out in the elements with her family.

While in South Australia for a wedding last weekend, she took the opportunity to visit friends on the Yorke Peninsula. Despite a flight to catch, family to see and work to catch up on, Cass wanted to make sure a line was thrown into unknown waters – something we all dream about.

She spent a few days in Port Victoria and with just one day of lovely clear weather (albeit cold!) she and partner Grant treated Ryder (12) and Evie (10) to one of Cass’s favourite childhood fishing memories, fishing for squid from the jetty.

With just a simple handline, float and squid jig set up, they soon had 4 beauties (and a few babies that were lovingly returned to the water for another day).

For Cass, this was a chance for her to show the kids a little part of her childhood fishing experiences, and to cook up an entrée of squid rings for our friends that night.

Whether you are young or old, fish for sport or leisure, fish alone or with family and friends, I think we can all agree that recreational fishing offers so much more than just the chance of catching a fish.  Whether it be the inland rivers and creeks that house Australia’s most iconic fish, the Murray cod, or the estuarine waters that gorge through Australia’s coastline, this is a pep talk for you to #MakeTimeForFishing.
