Popular Thinking Fish Forum returns to Mildura

Local anglers will hear from leading names in fisheries research and river management at an upcoming event in Mildura, on Thursday 4 August.

OzFish, Australia’s recreational fishing charity, is hosting the next instalment of its Thinking Fish Forum series at Mildura Café 1909. The free event will allow local anglers to hear about fish habitat restoration in their region, tips for fishing local waters, and how they can support better river management.

To address the challenges of aquatic habitat degradation and its impact on fishing experiences, OzFish is responsible for delivering restoration projects and community engagement events across Australia.

Braeden Lampard, OzFish’s Murray Darling Basin Program Manager, says the forum will allow people to connect the dots between habitat restoration, and catching fish in the local waterways.

“When it comes to participating in habitat restoration, one barrier that is often faced is an understanding of the benefit it can provide to the fishing prospects,” said Braeden.

“Our Thinking Fish Forums will identify the problems our fish face in a relaxed setting, and then outline how we, the community, can do something about it.

“Our projects at OzFish are reliant on anglers getting out and volunteering their time, and the Thinking Fish Forum is a great first step to making that happen in the Sunraysia region,” said Braeden.

Leading fishing expert Lubin Pfeiffer will be speaking on the night, sharing his experiences of catching Murray cod in the Murray Darling Basin. The renowned recreational fisher, and host of The Full-Scale Fishing Adventures says he is excited to speak about fishing in the local waters to an engaged and passionate audience.

“One thing I love about fishing is how it brings people together from all walks of life who share the same passion. To think we will have a bunch of keen rec fishos in the same room talking about Murray Cod and the issues they face is amazing for both the sport and the community,” said Lubin.

 Other speakers will include:

  • Braeden Lampard – OzFish Unlimited
  • Peter Heath – NSW DPI Fisheries
  • Ian Ellis – NSW DPI Fisheries
  • Peter Rose – North Central CMA

The Thinking Fish Forum runs from 6pm to 8.30pm and is free to attend but registration is essential to secure a spot.  Register here.

Nibbles will be available on the night, and drinks can be purchased from the bar.

This project has been supported by Mallee Catchment Management Authority, Tri State Alliance, NSW DPI Fisheries, the Murray Darling Basin Authority, Landcare Victoria (Victorian Landcare Grants) and BCF – Boating, Camping, Fishing.
