OzFishers Ready to Step Up for Clean Up Australia Day

OzFish Unlimited, Australia’s leading fishing conservation movement, is ready to step up with their army of volunteers to make Clean Up Australia Day 2022 a success.

The downpour of rain across Australia has left a path of destruction, not only damaging homes, but leaving a mass of debris in its wake. Such weather events have a long-lasting impact, not only for people, but for our environment as well.

The flooding gives volunteers even more of a reason to get involved in this year’s event, with OzFish volunteers and community members preparing to walk riverbanks and beaches, lakes and creeks to reach whatever debris and litter they can find.

By utilising the manpower of close to 50 local chapters, OzFish plans to remove waste from waterways in all seven states and territories.

Some 20 local events are being run by OzFish members and will be targeting some of the best fishing spots in the country.

Due to the impact of recent heavy rainfall, some events have been postponed and will be rescheduled to assist in the recovery efforts. All updates will be provided on the events page of our website.

Craig Copeland, OzFish Founder and CEO says restoring vital fish habitat and protecting these often-fragile ecosystems are the hallmark of OzFish work, especially when a flood is thrown into the mix.

“OzFish are aware of the negative impact that litter has on our waterways and aims to be a part of the solution. With parts of NSW and QLD devastated by recent flooding events, Clean Up Australia Day this year is a chance to collectively use the power of many to clean up all the debris and litter in the aftermath of the flood.

“Rec fishers spend hours on end enjoying what our local waterways have to offer, they also see firsthand the damage to habitats from the litter problem. Clean Up Australia Day is a chance to give something back and make a difference to the rivers and creeks near us”, said Craig.

People can join an already established clean up event on the OzFish website at: ozfish.org.au/step-up-for-clean-up-australia-day-2022

All the litter collected will be sorted and counted, then entered into the Australian Marine Debris Database which is used by researchers to inform future reduction opportunities.
