Fish are now Biting in Lake Wyangan as Native Species are Restocked
OzFish Unlimited, alongside Griffith City Council, Armstrong Plant Hire and local recreational fishers took on the massive task of restocking fish into Lake Wyangan, Griffith, on the 10th of December 2021.
The volunteers embarked on this special occasion by releasing fish at the shoreline and boating to several release locations throughout the lake.
Due to several native fish species dying and an increase in common carp in the lake, fishing opportunities were becoming slim. Normally when restocking fish, sizes under 5cm are used, making this project one of the largest adult fish stockings to occur in New South Wales.
Releasing native fish into the lake is beneficial to the area as it improves recreational fishing opportunities and helps threatened species to recover. It hasn’t taken long for the local fishers to see results from the project, with big smiles all around as large adult Murray cod are being caught.
The newly introduced adult fish will receive a helping hand in the form of woody habitats and rock reefs being installed in the lake, providing valuable habitat, breeding grounds, and additional food sources for the fish. In addition, family friendly fishing events are being held that will support the removal of pest species and encourage an appreciation from a younger audience for protecting fishing grounds. These actions are a positive contribution to Lake Wyangan, which will see an increase in visitation and for the local community to appreciate the lake once again.
