Euston-Robinvale Region anglers take the pledge to make habitat restoration a priority

Australia’s fishing conservation charity, OzFish has launched their newest chapter set to make fish habitat regeneration a priority on the Murray River with the inclusion of the Euston-Robinvale Chapter.

Covering the Euston-Robinvale River basins, this area is a popular fishing location that is 95 KM South-East of Mildura or 132 KM North of Swan Hill and is home to some of the best Murray Cod and Golden Perch fishing in the country.

In recent years, there have been ongoing concerns about the lack of structure and habitat loss in this popular fishing area.

The situation was made worse after the devasting impacts of the black summer bushfires which pushed back any chances for the river to recover naturally.

OzFish President for the Euston-Robinvale Chapter, Tracey Sinclair, had observed the benefits of the resnagging projects that have happened downstream through the work of OzFish Sunraysia Chapter at Mildura and wanted to bring that same level of enthusiasm and dedication to her part of the river.

“Seeing some of the work that OzFish does in nearby areas and the positive impact this is having on the local fish populations – I just had to get in on the action,” said Tracey.

“Every fish in the river deserves to have the same level of attention applied to their local habitat,” said Tracey.

The Euston-Robinvale Chapter has a range of project ideas in mind and is keen to get the wider community involved to hear their thoughts.

“We are looking at everything from resnagging , riparian planting and bush fire recovery projects as opportunities to get people together so they can learn how to fish sustainably. We would love to see locals come out and support this great movement, it’s a win-win for everyone involved”, said Tracey.

Scott Sinclair, who is the Secretary of the Chapter, is keen to establish a regular opportunity to get together and fix issues they see in their waterways.

“The OzFish Chapter is not isolated to the rivers but the entire catchment area”, said Scott.

“We would love to see the community come together regularly and discuss what can improve and work through solutions with the support that OzFish provides”.

“There are local recreational fishermen out there that have been fishing here for years and have seen significant changes over time, so we want to hear from you and get your input,” said Scott.

The need to improve the habitats of our native freshwater species is critical. An OzFish chapter in this region is a good way for the community to work together towards a healthy, vibrant, and more productive fishery.
