Lower Darling fish habitat to get boost

Local OzFish Sunraysia Chapter and NSW Western Landcare will soon lay-up to 20 large River Red Gum trunks and stumps into key sections of the Lower Darling riverbed to provide more homes for fish. The two groups have jointly received a Communities Environment Program (CEP) grant to improve vital fish habitat in the Lower Darling River.

Recent studies show that the Darling River is one of the most important sections of the Basin for golden perch and Murray cod populations as it provides breeding sites for the iconic species.

The project will utilise recreational fishers’ passion and skills to deliver the resnagging project that will provide long-term sustainable benefits and more productive fisheries.

OzFish Project Manager for the Murray-Darling Basin, Braeden Lampard has praised local recreational fishers for continuing to get informed and involved in habitat improvement work.

“Recreational anglers are responsible for ensuring the longevity of their sport by getting active in habitat restoration. I’m very proud of how the Mildura locals have stepped up. They’ve got informed, rolled up their sleeves and our backyard is benefitting. Not just for us but for our kids,” said Mr Lampard.

The Lower Darling River was in the spotlight earlier this year after native fish were relocated from drying waterholes at the height of the drought.

“The group in partnership with landowners is now specifically targeting waterways that are considered crucial and lacking in fish habitat such as the Lower Darling,” he said.

CEP grants are a Federal Government initiative that supports small-scale, on-ground projects to address local environmental priorities and strengthen communities.

The need for more habitat within the Murray Darling Basin is critical and this project is just another way OzFish and their regional chapters are working towards a healthier, sustainable fishing and future proofing our fishing habitat.

This project was made possible by the OzFish-Landcare NSW partnership with funding support from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts.
