New podcast looks below the surface to uncover what’s really happening with Australian fish
The health of Australia’s fish and habitat is the subject of a new podcast launched today by leading national fishing conservation charity, OzFish Unlimited.
‘OzCast: a look below the surface’ will provide recreational fishers with deeper insight into current research in the hope of inspiring even more fishers to help look after the future of fishing.
The podcast will feature some of Australia’s leading scientists, fish ecologists, and industry experts discussing the key issues impacting the country’s waterways and fish productivity. They will share findings, explain the research, present challenges and solutions, and entertain you with untold stories of their own.
The line-up of guests is an impressive one, with the first three episodes looking at current issues significantly impacting our fish and human health right now.
First up, renowned veterinary scientist Dr Matt Landos will discuss the rise of microplastics in our waterways. The Podcast titled “Are we eating rubbish? The true magnitude of Australia’s litter problem” uncovers how a lot of our litter breaks down into microplastics and how it ends up in fish and consequently impacts human health.
Episodes two and three will feature internationally respected fish ecologist Dr Martin Mallen-Cooper with a focus on the Murray-Darling Basin. Listeners will get to hear opinions on releasing the carp virus and on what led to the severe degradation of the largest river system in Australia called “How the river runs. The plight of, and solutions for, native fish in our inland rivers”.
Craig Copeland, founder and CEO of OzFish, believes OzCast will take the message about waterway health and habitat restoration to an even wider audience.
“OzFish is about empowering recreational fishers to play a part in looking after their local waterway. Understanding the ecology of our waterways is key,” said Mr Copeland.
