Australia’s top fish experts head to Moree to talk fish

Moree  recreational fishers and passionate water users are invited to attend the free ‘Thinking Fish’ public talks at the Moree Services Club on Wednesday 4 May, hosted by fishing conservation charity OzFish Unlimited.

The event will see some of the leading names in fisheries research and river management take the stage in a TEDx style talk in a bid to educate the local community on what can be done to restore and protect native fish in their backyard.

With the original event postponed due to Covid-19 last year, OzFish have spent the time modifying the list of guest speakers to get the best lineup possible. They will talk on some of the major issues surrounding the local Gwydir and Mehi rivers.

The passionate and knowledgeable speakers will present their ideas about managing environmental water, modern screening of irrigation pumps, threatened species, resnagging and replanting riparian vegetation, with the aim to generate debate about the issues facing native fish in the northern Basin.

OzFish CEO and Founder Craig Copeland says that a lot can be done in these areas to improve the local fishery, and anglers have an important role in being part of the solution.

“Like all projects we do at OzFish, it starts with understanding the core issues that are affecting our fish and these public talks will be valuable for the community.

“Because this is a complex challenge, we have invited some exceptionally talented people into one place, so you won’t be disappointed by the talks,” Craig said.
