The decline of Westernport’s mangrove forests

The mangroves of Westernport are amongst the world’s southernmost forests and are a key part of the RAMSAR listed wetland area. Unfortunately, clearing and sedimentation have resulted in the their decline. Restoration activities have also been hindered due to the perception that mangrove forests can ruin beaches, access, and views.

Mangroves are critical coastal ecosystems which act as nursery grounds for many native species of fish. Protecting and restoring them has a key role to play in supporting Australian fisheries.

Improving critical habitat for marine life

OzFish Unlimited and local community members will undertake direct planting of mangrove seedlings in an area of fragmented mangrove forest. Restoring this vital habitat will increase habitat for marine life, improve water quality, and stabilise the shoreline, which will protect the iconic coastline for generations to come.

Creating awareness through education and engagement

Alongside the delivery of habitat restoration, OzFish will provide education events and materials to educate the community on the importance and conservation of mangroves. This will promote stewardship within the community of Western Port Bay and grow connection to the local environment.
