OzFish coordinated seed collection trials where over 300 community volunteers gathered 10,000 seagrass fruits of the species Posidonia australis from metropolitan beaches from Aldinga to North Haven during the summer of 2020-2021.

OzFish’s Seeds for Snapper initiative arrived in South Australia in 2020, following its success in Cockburn Sound, Western Australia. With more than 6,000 hectares of seagrass meadows lost from Adelaide’s metropolitan coastline, over a fifth of the city’s fishing grounds, the local fisheries ecology had been devastated.

OzFish mobilised its community of volunteers and partners to begin addressing the issue and restoring healthy seagrass meadows to the area. In just its first year, the initiative saw more than 300 volunteers work together to put in 1,883 hours and return over 10,000 seeds to the ocean.
