Working together

OzFish Unlimited, in conjunction with Hawkesbury-Nepean Landcare Network (HNLN) and Penrith City Council Bushcare are working to improve the health and habitat of School House Creek in Regentville.

Across a number of weekends organised by HNLN, volunteers helped restore the banks and bushland of the creek. Events included activities such as water quality testing, frog identification and a nature walk.

Local partnerships like this one are vital in recovering damaged waterways and improving vital fish habitat. It’s also great for the kids and families as they gain a better understanding of how the ecosystem works.

Upgrade for local fish

School House Creek is directly connected to the Nepean River and is downstream from Glenmore Loch, with the River Flat Eucalypt Forest adjacent to the creek playing an important role for filtering urban runoff and reducing erosion, and sedimentation of the watercourse. The new shrubs will also increase invertebrate numbers that provide food for native fish in the waterway while also providing shade.

Did you know that our native fish need native trees?

The fish rely on riparian vegetation for a whole range of things including shade (which helps regulate water temperature), structure and habitat in the form of root balls and future snags, a source of food – think about all the insects and critters that live in the trees, plus a whole lot more!
