1000 native trees and shrubs

planted

7 hectares of noxious weeds

removed

300 metres of fencing

installed

OzFish Unlimited has restored 7 hectares of the riparian zone along the Nymboida River following the devastating 2019-2020 Black Summer bushfires.

Returning river banks to nature

Removal of privet, lantana and other exotic weeds has been undertaken to reduce competition with native plants. 300 metres of fencing was established to remove roaming stock from the riparian area allowing for revegetation.

Community action for the future

Two community planting events saw volunteers plant 1000 native trees and shrubs, empowering and upskilling local landholders to take action in preparing for and recovering from fires and flooding.

Improved outcomes for fish

Riparian vegetation will stabilise the river banks and reduce erosion. Incoming nutrients will be filtered, improving water quality, with shade from trees regulating water temperature, providing bug fall for fish, and creating habitat for terrestrial and aquatic species including the endangered Eastern Freshwater Cod (Maccullochella ikei).
