OzFish is working with Hawkesbury-Nepean Landcare Network and Cattai Hills Environment Network, to rebuild numbers of native fish, such as the Australia bass, and create a healthier habitat for the iconic platypus.

Working together to address erosion and build healthy habitats

OzFish Hawkesbury-Nepean Chapter teamed up with Hawkesbury-Nepean Landcare Network and Cattai Hills Environment Network to restore healthy habitat along the banks of Cattai Creek.

The area in question had been subject to high rates of habitat destruction, invasive species of plants and wildlife, and waterway pollution. All of these factors had combined to create a number of challenges, including erosion of the riverbanks.

Following removal of invasive privet shrub from 45 metres of the creek’s banks, the area was replanted with 800 native grasses and shrubs. This included weeping grass, blue flax lily and 200 native trees and shrubs, such as the Christmas bush. This will play an important role in shoring up the riverbanks and preventing soil and other debris being washed into the creek – improving the water quality.

The trees overhanging the creek will also provide an important source of food and shade for native fish, such as the Australia bass, and other wildlife that inhabit the area, including platypus.
