OzFish Unlimited worked to support a number of eel-tailed freshwater catfish thanks to a project with the Deniliquin Kolety Lagoons Landcare Group, Joint Indigenous Group, NSW DPI Fisheries, Murray Local Land Services, Edward Wakool Anglers Association, and the Edward Kolety Fishing Challenge.

OzFish Unlimited worked to support native fish in the Darling River, thanks to a productive carp muster day. OzFish Unlimited, NSW DPI Fisheries and Landcare NSW ran a free fishing event at Menindee, NSW. This community based event featured prizes, raffles, and a free lunch for those who registered to protect our waterways from the ravages of this invasive species.

Wambuul Macquarie River, NSW 2021/23

Wambuul Macquarie River, NSW 2021/23

OzFish has removed invasive weeds from a section of the Wambuul Macquarie River near Buckhobble to improve water quality and healthy habitat for native fish and wildlife. OzFish worked alongside private landholders, community members, and key contractors to improve a 2km degraded section of the Wambuul Macquarie River. The project has been funded by the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust and BCF – Boating, Camping, Fishing.

OzFish is removing invasive weeds from Oolong Creek as part of efforts to protect one of the few remaining known populations of Southern pygmy perch in NSW.

The project is part of OzFish’s Driving Fish Habitat Action partnership with Landcare NSW, in collaboration with Dalton Community Association, NSW DPI Fisheries, and renowned researcher Mark Lintermans, with funding support from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust, the Australian Government through the CRC Program, and BCF – Boating, Camping, Fishing.

OzFish is returning woody habitat to Bethungra Dam as part of a wider program to boost native fish populations in the waterway. Snags will provide fish with shade, shelter, and places to breed and feed.

The project is part of OzFish’s Driving Fish Habitat Action partnership with Landcare NSW, in collaboration with Junee Shire Council, with funding support from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust, the Australian Government through the CRC Program, and BCF – Boating, Camping, Fishing.

Blicks River, NSW 2022

OzFish is removing invasive weeds and returning native vegetation to an area of rainforest ravaged by fires. The restoration along Blicks River in NSW will benefit native fish species including eastern freshwater cod and the iconic Australian bass.

The project is part of OzFish’s Driving Fish Habitat Action partnership with Landcare NSW, with funding support from NSW Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service Inc (WIRES), and BCF – Boating, Camping, Fishing.

Coolah restoration project

Coolah restoration project

OzFish and Dunedoo-Coolah Landcare are working with a remote community in Central NSW to restore healthy habit to the waterway following drought and floods. The project activity will complement what the local community has already achieved with the creation of a riverside trail walk. Sponsored and delivered by locals, this features picnic tables, art sculptures, memorial trees, and is regularly maintained by volunteers.

OzFish Inland Waterways and Wellington Chapters are working with Mid Macquarie Landcare, to reduce erosion and improve water quality along the Wambuul Macquarie River. This will support native fish species, wildlife and vegetation.

OzFish Hawkesbury-Nepean Chapter is working in partnership with Hawkesbury-Nepean Landcare Network and Hawkesbury City Council to restore native vegetation to the banks of the Macdonald River. This will improve water quality and enhance the habitat for fish, including Australian bass. 

The project is part of the OzFish-Landcare NSW partnership and is supported with funding from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts, and BCF – Boating, Camping and Fishing.

Murray River Flood Rescues 2022

Extreme flooding has resulted in hypoxic blackwater events which is having a devastating effect on fish and freshwater crayfish along the Murray River and its tributaries in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. OzFish have been working alongside authorities to deploy our Fish Emergency Recovery Team to save as many affected fish as possible.
