Saltmarsh Clean Up – West Ballina, NSW
June 25, 2022 @ 9:30 am - 11:00 am AEST
OzFish will be cleaning up the saltmarsh where debris has floated and is now causing damage.
Due to the recent flood events, we have seen a lot of debris in and around the catchment. Unfortunately, once debris enters waterways it goes out to the ocean. At high tides it can also get stuck in and around our valuable fish habitats like saltmarsh.
On the day, we will be collecting rubbish and counting how much rubbish is removed from the area. This information will be provided to marine debris experts, Tangaroa Blue. This data is important for ongoing monitoring in the area. These activities will be fun and family-friendly. All are welcome to come along and participate to learn more about these important ecosystems.
When: Saturday 25th June 9:30-11:00am
WHERE: Fishery Creek Road, West Ballina (Before you reach the bridge to the Mens Shed)
Participants are asked to make sure they wear enclosed shoes that can get wet, a hat (an OzFish one if you have one!), Gumboots, sunscreen and bring plenty of water. The day has been planned around the low tide to ensure participants can get up close and involved in this dynamic ecosystem.
Did you know:
Saltmarsh are delicate fish habitats that don’t like anything resting on them. If they have debris laying on them for too long it can cause suffocation and the saltmarsh die. Recovery can take years for the saltmarsh to come back.
Saving Our Saltmarsh is a NSW government-funded restoration and rehabilitation program that OzFish are conducting in the Richmond River. The project is part of our push to revitalise and restore the local waterways to create better habitat, and as a result, better fishing in the Richmond River.
Registration is essential.
