Freshwater Creek Fish Surveys – QLD

May 21, 2023 @ 8:30 am - 11:00 am AEST

OzFish Cairns are excited to announce that we are partnering with Treeforce and Terrain NRM to collect baseline fish diversity information from a disused weir along Freshwater Creek that is acting as a fish passage barrier.

We will also assess regrowth from tree planting conducted at this site ~3 years ago and how that is contributing to improving waterway health.

Sampling will consist of a mix of netting and underwater video. Macroinvertebrates will be collected using dip nets and collected for identification.

This is an opportunity for volunteers to learn more about the fish fauna of Freshwater Creek, and to collect information that will contribute to improving fish passage in our waterways. Sample collection is non-technical and advice and training on sampling techniques will be provided by the project team.

Registration is essential. We hope to see you there!

This work is funded through a grant from the National Landcare Program to Terrain NRM and OzFish Unlimited, with additional funding towards this event from Treeforce. It is also supported by BCF – Boating, Fishing and Camping.
