Cairns Airport Fish Surveys – QLD

September 8, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 6:30 pm AEST

OzFish are excited to announce the next round of fish surveys as part of our Cairns Airport Mangrove Restoration project.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about the fish fauna of Cairns and the wet tropics. Recreational fishers are encouraged to attend and to contribute to improving our knowledge of fish stocks in Cairns. If you are able to throw a cast net, we would particularly like to hear from you.

The aim of the project is to assess the effect of waterway barriers on fish communities in mangrove wetlands. The information collected will be used to monitor changes to fish populations as a result of waterway barrier remediation.

Tentative schedule:
Gather at the gate out the front of the project site at 16:00
Introductions and talks from invited speakers (environmental restoration practitioners & traditional owners)
Cast net surveys from 16:45 – 17:30
Retrieve nets at 17:30
Event wrap-up at 18:00 – 18:30

This event will be conducted outside and next to a mangrove wetland. Attendees are advised to wear appropriate clothing (hat, long-sleeved shirt, long pants, closed shoes). Attendees can also bring gloves and insect repellent.

Registration is essential.
