Introduction

OzFish has launched the Wellington Chapter to focus on making fish habitat regeneration a priority along the Macquarie River.

Four passionate recreational anglers from the Twin Rivers fishing club have established the OzFish Wellington Chapter to take over the Burrendong Classic in 2022.

The Inland Waterways Rejuvenation Association (IWRA), who previously coordinated the event, are ready to hand the baton over to the chapter to continue this fantastic event.

About Wellington

Located at the Wambuul Macquarie and Bell Rivers junction, Wellington is home to some great freshwater fishing.

Thirty minutes downstream of the Macquarie, the waters take you to Lake Burrendong – The home of the much loved and long-running Burrendong Easter Classic.

The need for more fish habitat within the Macquarie is critical. The Wellington Chapter invites local recreational anglers to join the Chapter and community partners to work towards a healthy, vibrant and more productive fishery.

Taking on the Burrendong Classic

The Burrendong is a strictly catch-and-release and not-for-profit fishing competition.

These keen anglers have attended the Easter Burrendong Classic in previous years.  The competition attract thousands of recreational anglers entering the competition. People turn up in droves to camp along the banks of the Burrendong to support this event.

All funds raised go back into waterway initiatives, including fishing education and habitat restoration.

Giving back to fishing

The local anglers have a vested interest in their  waterways.

Running the Burrendong Classic makes sense because it encourages sustainable fishing practices, and the funds raised will support our local waterways.

The chapter plans to use funds raised from the competition to help recreational fishers in Wellington promote sustainable fishing, undertake rubbish cleanups, and increase the capacity of the rivers to carry more native fish stocks.
