Another Year, Another Gone Fishing Day!
On Sunday 13 October, the Swansea Boat Ramp transformed into a bustling hub of family fun and community spirit for OzFish’s annual ‘Gone Fishing Day’.
Despite the dreary, rainy weather, over 20 enthusiastic attendees and 5 dedicated OzFish volunteers donned their blue shirts, proving that nothing can dampen the enthusiasm of passionate fishers!
Families spanning multiple generations gathered, sharing their wisdom and expertise in a vibrant atmosphere. Many kids were already seasoned fishos, showcasing their skills and impressively grasping sustainable fishing practices. It was heart-warming to witness the younger generation actively engaging with the concept of the day, eager to learn more about protecting our precious waterways.
The day featured a lively casting competition where both seasoned anglers and enthusiastic newbies took aim, showcasing their skills and friendly competition. Laughter and friendly banter filled the air as everyone took their shot at landing a sinker.
OzFish also highlighted the crucial role of oysters in our ecosystems through an eye-opening tank demonstration. Attendees learned how these marine superheroes filter water and support aquatic health, sparking conversations about the importance of maintaining our waterways.
After the demonstrations, participants were set free to fish in the stunning Lake Macquarie. Conversations flowed as freely as the rain, with OzFish volunteers mingling with fishers, sharing tips and stories while reinforcing the importance of conservation.
The excitement didn’t stop there- prizes supplied by BCF powered the day’s festivities, leading to numerous smiling faces. The event culminated in a relaxed pizza feast where winners of the many draws were announced, adding a tasty twist to an already rewarding day.
Gone Fishing Day isn’t just an event; it’s a nationwide celebration that unites communities through a shared love of fishing and environmental stewardship. It raises awareness about the pressing issues facing our waterways and the fish populations that call them home.
A huge thank you goes out to everyone who braved the elements, got involved, and generously supported OzFish’s vital mission. Your contributions help ensure we can continue our important work for years to come. Until next year!
