Fish Screens making a difference for farmers and fish

Irrigation pumps and canals unintentionally pump eggs, larvae, juveniles and adult fish from waterways – killing tens of millions of fish every year.

Many pumps are screened with basic meshes or grids which become clogged. New fish screen technology works to protect pumps reduce costs for farmers and reduce fish intake.

Since OzFish started we have been pursuing the uptake of this new technology with our members, particularly Matt Hansen, and our staff promoting this issue among Murray Darling Basin Irrigators, seeking funding for works and supporting DPI Fisheries by managing the fishscreens.org.au website.

Near Mildura in 2022 Duxton Vineyards installed two fish screens on the pumps for its 130-hectare Avoca vineyard with the support of Western Local Land Services.

Watch as we interview the General Manager of Duxton Vineyards Wayne Ellis on the benefits to the Avoca vineyard and fish in the Murray River.
