Home / Habitat Hotels Installed

With habitat playing a major role in the life-cycle for native fish, the need for more snags in the Murray River and in off-stream habitats like Butlers Creek is essential. Native fish use snags as a refuge from fast-flowing rivers and predators, as a place to breed and to predate.

Sunraysia OzFish members ran a collaborative program with Sunraysia Institute of Tafe and Mallee CMA that saw custom fish habitat hotels installed into Butlers Creek. Sunraysia OzFish members determined the appropriate site to install the large woody debris after reviewing past literature, considering past habitat mapping and consulting with the community and relevant government agencies. The project provided a great opportunity for a broad range of demographics to learn and construct specific style habitats for our native fish species.

This project would not be possible without the support of local community partnerships and our corporate partner BCF – Boating, Camping, Fishing.
