OzFish River Repair Bus rolling into Sunraysia
The Sunraysia region is set to receive significant support over the coming years with the setup of a locally based OzFish River Repair Bus. The bus, was recently awarded funding by a Federal Government 2020 Murray-Darling Basin Economic Development grant. It will provide an opportunity for up to 35 participants per year to gain unique skills in hands-on river restoration and prepare them for future employment.
The River Repair Bus is a truly unique, successful initiative developed by one of OzFish Unlimited Chapters – Inland Waterways based in Dubbo where it has been used weekly for rubbish and weed removal, revegetation and riverbend planting and habitat improvements along kilometers of the Macquarie River.
OzFish Chief Executive Officer, Craig Copeland said, “Our Dubbo based Chapter have kicked significant goals with their River Repair Bus and we can’t wait to repeat them in the Sunraysia region.
“The bus concept has been tried and tested, so we’re thrilled to be able to support this service in the Sunraysia region where people love their fishing and care so much about fish habitat.” said Member for Mallee Anne Webster. Sunraysia River Repair Bus will provide support to the community to build their skills and experience, increase employability while also improving the local environment
As one of the most dedicated and active chapters, Sunraysia OzFish volunteers are excited to see this bus up and running. Since establishment only 2 years ago, they have contributed over 2000 hours of volunteer work for local habitat restoration projects, citizen science initiatives and community engagement.
OzFish Project Manager for the Murray-Darling Basin, Braeden Lampard said, “The bus will establish further projects on the Murray River and associated wetlands and waterways. We will continue to develop and provide opportunities and partner with relevant local councils, other non-government groups and regional and state agencies to maximise the achievements of the bus and the experience of participants.
“The success of Sunraysia River Repair Bus will rely on ongoing engagement with local stakeholders which captures the knowledge and expectations of the region’s individuals, groups and organisations,” said Braeden.
The Sunraysia River Repair Bus is also supported by OzFish major partner, BCF-Boating, Camping, Fishing and by Victorian and New South Wales state government agencies.
This project is just another way OzFish and their regional chapters are empowering locals to work towards better habitat for better fishing.
