Revegetation and Weed Control

OzFish and Landcare are working together to help restore the riparian zone along Maguires Creek.  The site is located on a Macadamia orchard which was once a part of the Big Scrub and still has over 70 different species of big scrub plants identified throughout the site and surrounding. Regeneration of the site has been taking place over the last 4 years, targeting camphor laurels and other invasive weeds.

Repairing the riverbank

Unfortunately, there is sections of the creek which are covered with invasive weeds such as madeira vine and experiencing erosion, having been heavily impacted by the 2022 floods. To help stabilise the banks, reduce runoff and continue to connect to surrounding big scrub rainforest remnants, volunteers will help to plant out this section with 700 native trees and grasses.

Improving fish habitat

Without riparian vegetation helping to stabilise these banks, sediments and nutrients are running off into the waterways and impacting the many native fish species that live in Maguires Creek. By planting trees we will be helping to improve water quality, and habitat by providing shade and food for some of our favourite rec species.

This project is part of OzFish’s Driving Fish Habitat Action partnership with Landcare NSW, with funding support from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts and BCF – Boating, Camping, Fishing .
