80 volunteers attended the community fishing event and learnt how to remove invasive carp.
Removal of carp
Kyogle Landcare reached out to the OzFish Richmond River chapter after noticing a large population of invasive carp in Fawcett’s Creek. Fawcett’s Creek flows into the Richmond River and is important habitat for native fish including threatened Eastern Freshwater Cod.
Community engagement
A ‘carp out’ fishing competition was held along Fawcett’s Creek at Kyogle Amphitheatre. Local fishing experts demonstrated carp fishing techniques to Landcare volunteers so that they can continue to remove this invasive species from their local creek.
Prizes were awarded on the day and a BBQ was cooked by local landcafre volunteers.
Carp’s Devastating Impact
Carp are an introduced pest species in Australia. Carp have major negative impacts on water quality and biodiversity. They have decimated native fish populations since they first became established as a major pest species in the 1960s.
