Restocking Freshwater Catfish

OzFish Unlimited worked alongside Edward Wakool Angling Association, NSW DPI Fisheries, and the Joint Indigenous Group (JIG) to undertake the restocking and tagging of Freshwater Catfish into the Edwards-Wakool and Barham Lakes system. The purchase of these fish has been funded through the Edward Kolety Fishing Challenge and the Recreational Fishing Trust.

Community engagement

Events will be run throughout 2024 in Deniliquin and Barham Lakes system that will focus on catching Freshwater Catfish to undertake health checks and collect re-capture data, collecting illegally dumped rubbish, releasing Golden perch, releasing small bodied threatened fish species, running sustainable fishing clinics, and undertaking yabby trap drop off events.

Protecting native species

Eel-tailed catfish (Tandanus tandanus) were once common in the rivers and streams of the Edward (Kolety) – Wakool system but the numbers have declined significantly due to the introduction of pest species, loss of crucial habitat and changes to natural flow regimes to the point where they are now considered locally extinct.

This project was made possible by the OzFish-Landcare NSW partnership, with funding support from the Australian Government through the CRC Program, NSW DPI Fisheries, Murray LLS and BCF – Boating, Camping, Fishing.
