Great Australian pastime
With over 900,000 recreational anglers in the Murray Darling Basin (NSW DPI 2019), recreational fishers can play a major role in identifying issues, participating in action, and contributing to the protection and conservation of their local waterways.
Recreational fishing gives all Australians a motive to get outdoors and interact with nature, encourages young children and families to fish and offers a cost effective and healthy outdoor activity that can be enjoyed throughout an entire lifetime.
OzFish held one sustainable fishing clinic on Sunday 12th of November 2023 at Balranald, NSW, combined with a yabby trap ‘opera house’ net drop off, allowing locals to swap their now illegal opera house nets for Oar-gee lures.
Balranald is a small regional NSW town in the Riverina district of New South Wales, Australia, located on the Murrumbidgee River

Community engagement
This Community Fishing Day gave the opportunity for locals to learn key fishing activities and fishery science. This involved OzFish employees discussing general fish biology, river ecology, pest species and sustainable fishing practices with attendees. Lunch was provided and allowed attendees to mingle and chat with other attendees, as well as OzFish staff and volunteers.
Invasive species removal
This project also provided an opportunity to meet with other like-minded individuals and create future opportunities for recreational anglers to enjoy their local waterways. Removal of carp from the waterway was a key aspect of the event, benefiting both the community and the environment.
