Shellfish Revolution Launch
October 15, 2021 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am AEST
Today in many places, including Moreton Bay, shellfish reefs are considered functionally extinct.
OzFish volunteers have been collecting, washing, and preparing tonnes of used oyster shells for the past four years in preparation to re-establish shellfish reefs that were once thriving. A 19.41-hectare site provided by the Port of Brisbane has been approved for restoration in Moreton Bay, Quandamooka Country.
The launch marks the start of OzFish’s Shellfish Revolution as volunteers will deploy the first Robust Oyster Baskets (ROBs). The ROBs are used as base structures for ground-breaking shellfish restoration developed in Queensland by OzFish volunteers and local school students.
There will be 50,701 ROBs placed in the bay over the next 6 years to create the reef. The project has involved collaboration between Federal and State governments, industry and the community, and Traditional Owners.
This project will do more than improve water quality in the bay – it will rejuvenate aquatic life, improve fishing and fish productivity, seagrass growth and biodiversity. Every hectare of living shellfish reef restored produces an additional 2.5 tonnes of harvestable fish every year.
