Seeds for Snapper WA 2023 – Offshore Volunteer Session
November 24, 2023 @ 7:00 am - 3:00 pm AWST
We need dive volunteers to help with fruit collection at nearby offshore islands.
You will travel by charter vessel to seagrass meadows on Carnac or Garden Island to harvest Posidonia australis fruit for restoration work. Be prepared for two dives in a stunning location.
As members of the local community, you can play an active role in restoring these vitally important natural habitats. OzFish is determined to restore seagrass loss via harvesting seagrass fruits and reseeding them into areas ready to be re-established as seagrass meadows. Doing so will provide shelter for our diverse range of marine species, including important recreational fishing species such as our iconic pink snapper.
Offshore seagrass dive |ย 7am – 1pm
Seagrass squad (shore-based volunteers)ย |ย 1pm – 3pm
Before registering to participate in the event, please ensure that you have submitted your details to be a 2023 Seeds for Snapper WA volunteer with us.
Volunteer boaters are invited to scoop seagrass fruit floating on the surface of the water and drop them off at Cockburn Power Boats daily between 1pm-3pm. Seeds will become available for dispersing from around the 19th of November; see the team at the tanks to be given seeds for dispersal.
If you have any questions please feel free to email the team at seedsforsnapper@ozfish.org.au.
