Seagrass restoration field day 2/2 – TAS

March 29, 2023 @ 9:30 am - 11:30 am AEDT

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in Tasmania’s first seagrass restoration trial! Join OzFish and IMAS for a day out in the field to assist with and learn about the four different restoration methods being used in the trial.

Seagrass meadows are incredibly important as fish habitat. One hectare of seagrass is estimated to produce an average of 207 kilograms of fish per year more than an equivalent area without seagrass. Sadly, Australia has lost almost 30 per cent of its seagrass meadows since 1880. Come along to be a part of the change, by rebuilding essential habitat to support healthy fish populations.

Wetsuit boots or water shoes are essential! Please note you will be in water up to your knees. It is recommended to wear a wetsuit to keep warm and bring plenty of layers for the top half of your body.

Be prepared for all weather conditions: rain/wind jacket, sunblock, hat, sunglasses, long sleeve shirt.

BYO water and food.

Registration is essential. We hope to see you there!

OzFish was awarded a QBE Foundation local grant to fund this project in the Climate Resilience category. Additional funds are provided through an Australian Research Council Linkage grant awarded to Associate Professor Jeff Wright and Professor Paul Gribben, and a TSSP grant awarded to Dr Beth Strain. The project is being delivered in partnership with the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS).
