Mourilyan Harbour Seagrass Restoration (Deployment Day 1)

July 29, 2021 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm AEST

Seagrass Were Lost From Mourilyan Harbour In 2010 Following Several Years Of Heavy Rainfall And Flooding And Have Failed To Return After A Decade.

The absence of natural recovery has led to the need for a trial restoration (planting) of the seagrass habitat to return the ecological processes that seagrasses provide. OzFish together with TropWATER and the Mandubarra Rangers are trialing different planting methods by tying seagrass fragments to a variety of frames and deploying them in areas where seagrass habitat used to grow in Mourilyan Harbour. If this pilot study is successful, these methods will then be used to scale the restoration initiatives and grow large meadows in Mourilyan Harbour and other areas requiring restoration. Bring sun safe clothing, (e.g. hats, sunscreen, long sleeve shirts, etc.), insect repellent, enclosed, non-slip footwear, plenty of drinking water.
