Mourilyan Harbour Seagrass Collection and Planting

September 1, 2022 @ 10:00 am - September 3, 2022 @ 4:00 pm AEST

The Mourilyan Harbour Seagrass Collection and Planting event that was scheduled for this week has been postponed due to poor weather. The new dates for processing and planting are yet to be confirmed as it will be dependent on the tides and weather.

OzFish Cairns are excited to announce our third consecutive year of seagrass restoration trials at Mourilyan Harbour.

The aim of the project is to assess the feasibility of seagrass restoration in Mourilyan Harbour and follows over a decade of seagrass loss in the estuary.  Seagrass will be collected by the JCU Seagrass Ecology team in Trinity Inlet (Cairns), and then transported to JCU’s Smithfield campus for processing, sorting and preparation for planting. Seagrass planting will occur at Mourilyan Harbour, south of Innisfail. Volunteers are needed to assist with seagrass sorting and preparation at JCU’s Smithfield campus, and to assist with preparation of transplants at the Mourilyan Harbour boat ramp.

This project has been supported by JCU (TropWATER) and Mandubarra Land & Sea Rangers.
