eDNA Sample Collection – Wet Season – Townsville – QLD

March 22, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 2:30 pm AEST

OzFish North QLD are excited to announce the first round of sample collection for our project to assess fish diversity in tropical waterways using environmental DNA (eDNA).

This project will develop a meta-barcoding technique for eDNA that is specific to fish species in waterways of the wet and dry tropics, and will enable a more comprehensive assessment of fish assemblages in tropical waterways than is possible using conventional sampling methods.

This is an opportunity for volunteers to learn more about the fish fauna in their local waterways, and to contribute towards improvements in sampling techniques. Sample collection is non-technical and advice and training on sampling techniques will be provided by the project team. Participants will gain an improved understanding of fish fauna in their local waterways as well as contributing towards improved methods for fish sampling.

Project activities will take place in the wet season, and again at each location post-wet season.

Samples will also be collected from Alligator Creek day use area (own transport to and from Alligator Creek is required)

Registration is essential. We hope to see you there!

The eDNA sampling program is funded by the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation and is being delivered in partnership with OzFish Unlimited, James Cook University (TropWATER), Townsville City Council and BCF – Boating, Fishing and Camping.
