Maroochy Chapter

We bring people together to help protect and restore the places you love to fish.

OzFish is dedicated to helping local rec fishers across Australia take control of the health of their rivers, lakes and estuaries. We partner with members and the broader community to invest time and money into the protection and restoration of our waterways.

What we do:

    • Work with fishers to make local fishing grounds healthy, vibrant and more productive.
    • Share ideas on how to improve, restore and protect fish habitat.
    • Seek grants and support for hands-on habitat restoration.
    • Provide events, resources, education and research that support fishing groups to achieve local outcomes.

Members of the OzFish Maroochy Chapter have generations of invaluable knowledge caring for the local waterway and fish habitat.

For years they have restored eroding banks along the Maroochy River, planted mangroves and stabilised river banks and they are dedicated to making their river a fishier place.

Shellfish reefs were once prolific in the Maroochy River but sadly most have been lost. Shellfish reefs make homes for fish and other animals while filtering the water. With recent support from Healthy Land and Water through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program, the Maroochy chapter is making a great improvement to fish habitat

Recently the Chapter members met with Healthy Land and Water and Sunshine Coast City Council to discuss the Australian Government’s Fish Habitat Restoration Program to restore marine biodiversity to their much loved river.

The project includes mangrove rehabilitation for bank stabilisation, fish habitat along the current and former canelands, and shellfish habitat restoration which will include their own shell recycling operation.

Our Partners

None of this work would be possible without the support from our partners and community groups.
This project is supported by Healthy Land and Water through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program, and BCF – Boating Camping Fishing.

Caring For Country

Always Was, Always Will Be. Each year during NAIDOC week we recognise that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. For OzFishers we’re also passionate about restoring, protecting and learning about Country. One of the greatest ways to do this is – together – through sharing and celebrating culture, learning from traditional owners and getting input on traditional ways that work which can bring a healthy ecosystem back to life.
