OzFish has partnered with Landcare Australia to restore this important fish habitat, home to the endangered honey blue-eye and pygmy perch. The OzFish Noosa Chapter teamed up with Noosa Landcare to tackle the problem head-on and the two groups of volunteers spent hours removing the weeds for the endangered fish along Murdering Creek who rely on the native trees for food and shelter.
This work has helped reduce the devastation that the fires had on the area and the waters of Murdering Creek have bounced back. Not only is this great news for the endangered fish but also for the mangrove jack, bream, mullet, flathead, mud crabs, sand crabs and Australian bass who also call the creek home.
The picturesque Murdering Creek flows into Lake Wyber near Noosa and is an important fish habitat for endangered fish including honey blue eyes and Pigme Perch. because the fire had taken out the tree canopy, weeds were able to grow and quickly took over from the native vegetation.
Both the honey blue eye and the perch, who live in and around Murdering Creek, seek shelter, feed and breed under the coverage of native plants along the banks of the river.
With the weeds now removed, the team have finished off the job by planting some more natives along the banks of Murdering Creek to give the area and the fish a fresh start.
The devastating fires in 2019/20 that burnt Peregian Beach right up to the waterway has received some much needed help! Following the fires, the burnt trees and branches exposed the canopy and let many invasive weeds flourish.
