Yabby Trap Round Up – New South Wales

An initiative by TierraMar, through its Ghostnets Australia program, in collaboration with OzFish Unlimited and the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI), The Yabby Trap Round-Up is collecting all old and unwanted yabby traps to protect the future of fishing and the health of our waterways. The traps collected will be recycled into useful products for fishers, with the proceeds being used to support habitat restoration.

Working in collaboration with DWER and UWA, OzFish will soon begin Seagrass for Swimmers, a new Halophila ovalis seagrass restoration trial in Leschenault Estuary. This project will form part of Leschenault Catchment Council’s Leschenault Estuary Connect program, an innovative program aimed at connecting and engaging the local community to protect and enhance the Leschenault Estuary for future generations.

OceanEarth Foundation, in partnership with OzFish Unlimited, are on a mission to remove abandoned, lost, and discarded fishing gear (ghost gear) from our delicate marine environments. For years we have been hearing about piles of abandoned crab pots accumulating in popular fishing spots in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria, so in 2024, we are launching the Great Aussie Crab Pot Recovery!

Shellsavers, Flinders VIC

Mornington Peninsula locals are diverting oyster shells from landfill to create new reefs in Port Phillip and Westernport Bays. The Shell recycling site has been established at the Flinders hopper where the recycled shell is ready to be collected and undergo biosecurity protocols to be cured/ready for deployment.

OzFish unlimited will be working to improve a 2km stretch of the Murray River upstream from Euston by installing 20 large logs and rocky structures to enhance fish habitat. The restoration activities are designed to help restore the Murray River habitat and create better fishing in one of Australia’s largest freshwater rivers for today and for future generations.

OzFish Hawkesbury Nepean Chapter, Wallacia progress Association, Penrith City Council and the Hawkesbury Nepean Landcare Network aim to restore a popular section of the Nepean riverbank in Wallacia and hold a responsible fishing event to educate participants on eco-friendly fishing practices.

OzFish Unlimited, and partners propose to restore two degraded stretches of the Hunter River through riparian restoration and re-establishment of large woody fish habitat. The project will involve multiple community planting and education events, fish hotel building workshops, and citizen science monitoring opportunities.
