eDNA Sample Collection – Barratta Creek – QLD

November 10, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 11:30 am AEST

Herbert eDNA 13

OzFish are excited to announce the next round of sample collection for our project to assess fish diversity in tropical waterways using environmental DNA (eDNA).

Together with our project partners, we are working to develop fish sampling methods that can be completed by collecting water samples, as an alternative to setting traps or nets. Fish and other aquatic life leave fragments of DNA material in the water column, and this can be detected after processing the samples in the laboratory. We have recently completed the first stage of this project and we are continuing this work with a further round of sample collection.

This is an opportunity for volunteers to learn more about the fish fauna in their local waterways, and to contribute towards improvements in sampling techniques. Sample collection is non-technical and advice and training on sampling techniques will be provided by the project team.

We will meet at car park of United Petroleum, Giru, then travel to project site (10 – 15 min). Ride sharing may be available from Townsville or Ayr, depending on number of confirmed attendees .

Registration is essential. We hope to see you there!

The eDNA sampling program is funded by the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation and is being delivered in partnership with OzFish Unlimited, James Cook University (TropWATER), the University of Queensland, CSIRO and BCF – Boating, Fishing and Camping.
