OzFish and Corner Inlet fishers are working with Yarram Yarram Landcare Network to restore critical seagrass habitats in an internationally important Wetland. The project seeks to restore what has been lost, creating a healthy seagrass ecosystem for key target species, including integral to this ecosystem. Recreational anglers can find key target species, including King George whiting and flathead.
OzFish has been leading the restoration of seagrass meadows in South Australia since 2020 and now we’re expanding our program in the state. Until now, we’ve been restoring seagrass only along Adelaide’s metropolitan coastline but now we’re launching a second SA Seeds for Snapper project on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
Building on the fantastic large-scale shellfish restoration efforts already underway in Port Phillip, this project will focus on a smaller-scale, community-driven approach, with fishers rolling up their sleeves and helping to deploy reef substrate, monitor restoration progress and highlight rec fisher’s capabilities.
OzFish Volunteers have cleared weeds along the Coomera River at Barrs Scrub and have planted 1,250 plants, ensuring this important habitat will be healthy for generations of fish and fishers.
Adelaide’s metropolitan coastline has lost over 6000Ha of seagrass meadows. These meadows are a nursery ground for baby snapper and other sea life. OzFish together with leading scientists are bringing these beautiful meadows back to help our fisheries.

Queensland Tropical Seagrass Restoration aims to establish a coordinated volunteer seagrass restoration program spanning from Gladstone to Cairns in eastern Queensland. It will also enhance community and Traditional Owner capabilities to expand seagrass restoration efforts across the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) region.
Environmental DNA (eDNA) is being trialled to assess fish diversity in tropical waterways. We are working with our project partners to develop monitoring techniques using eDNA as an alternative to traditional fish sampling methods, such as netting or trapping, as they are not always easy or appropriate.
OzFish are partnering with Charles Sturt University, recreational fishers, and First Nations people to better understand how to design and implement basin-wide scientific programs with citizen scientists to address the gaps.
The Curdies River and estuary is a destination waterway for angling species such as Black Bream and Estuary Perch in south-west Victoria. Being an intermittent estuary, the mouth where the estuary meets the ocean at Peterborough on the Great Ocean Road, can be closed to the ocean by sand build-up for long periods of time.
Mornington Peninsula locals are diverting oyster shells from landfill to create new reefs in Port Phillip and Westernport Bays. The Shell recycling site has been established at the Flinders hopper where the recycled shell is ready to be collected and undergo biosecurity protocols to be cured/ready for deployment.
OzFish volunteers and members of the local community set out to take steps to begin the return of thriving shellfish reefs to the Port River estuary. This built on previous successful trials by the Estuary Care Foundation to return native flat oysters to the waterway.
