Community members will create ecosystems by deploying shell over reef balls. Anglers and volunteers will drop bagged shell from boats over the concrete reef balls from late 2024 to late 2026. Fish species will be monitored during this time using BRUVs.
OzFish joined forces with students from grades 4 and 5 at St Mary’s and St Joseph’s Primary School to immerse themselves in a habitat restoration project aimed to revitalise the mangrove forests nestled within Hastings Foreshore, Westernport Bay in Victoria.
Large logs were dropped into the water and 35 tonnes of rock were strategically placed. The installed structures will provide critical breeding sites, shelter and protection from predators, a place to rest, ambush sites and feeding grounds for aquatic species, such as the iconic Murray Cod.
OzFish Unlimited, Goulburn Murray Water (GMW), North Central Catchment Management Authority (NCCMA), and local anglers are embarking on a vital project to enhance the lake’s habitat. These efforts will ensure the sustainable growth of native fish, mainly the Murray Cod.
OzFish Unlimited, First Nations, and recreational anglers will be working together to restore critical habitats in the Sunraysia region thanks to a funding boost through the Australian Government’s Murray-Darling Healthy Rivers Program.
OzFish is working with Bass Coast Landcare Network, with funding from CoastCare Victoria, to restore the mangrove forests in Western Port Bay, Victoria. The project project aims to plant up to 2,000 individual mangroves to bridge the fragmented stands of mangroves currently at the site. The project will increase the extent of critical habitat for marine life, improve water quality, and protect this iconic coastline for generations to come.
Extreme flooding has resulted in hypoxic blackwater events which is having a devastating effect on fish and freshwater crayfish along the Murray River and its tributaries in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. OzFish have been working alongside authorities to deploy our Fish Emergency Recovery Team to save as many affected fish as possible.

The Barwon River and Estuary flows through the heart of Geelong and is a popular fishing destination from the banks or a kayak, chasing the elusive Estuary Perch and Bream. Flowing down into Lake Connewarre, the Barwon then expands again into the inlet and the mouth where it reaches the ocean at Barwon Heads.
A bushfire recovery program led by Landcare Australia, delivered in partnership with OzFish Unlimited and Native Fish Australia (Victoria), will support initiatives to restore habitat for ten national priority threatened aquatic species in Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales.
