Queensland Tropical Seagrass Restoration aims to establish a coordinated volunteer seagrass restoration program spanning from Gladstone to Cairns in eastern Queensland. It will also enhance community and Traditional Owner capabilities to expand seagrass restoration efforts across the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) region.
Environmental DNA (eDNA) is being trialled to assess fish diversity in tropical waterways. We are working with our project partners to develop monitoring techniques using eDNA as an alternative to traditional fish sampling methods, such as netting or trapping, as they are not always easy or appropriate.

Tackle Loop is OzFish’s solution to provide a home for recreational fishers’ old, unwanted, and broken gear. Working with our partners, we will take in old and discarded gear before ensuring it is recycled instead of polluting Australia’s waterways or ending up in landfill.
The Bohle and Ross River catchments are the focus of fish surveys to improve urban waterway management with the help of volunteer recreational anglers.
OzFish Cairns Chapter is working towards re-establishing seagrass meadows in an intertidal estuarine system in Mourilyan Harbour south-east of Innisfail. The pilot project has input from local recreational anglers and university researchers and will assess the success of a unique seagrass restoration technique.
The project aims to monitor water quality in a tropical coastal wetland and is a collaboration between Australia’s dedicated fishing conservation organisation OzFish Unlimited, NQ Dry Tropics and recreational fishers from the Burdekin Fish Stocking Association.
