With the help of recreational fishers, OzFish is working to restore seagrass habitat in Cockburn Sound, Western Australia.
Each year hundreds of recreational fishers, divers and community members in Western Australia take part in the Seeds For Snapper project to restore the lost seagrass of Cockburn Sound.
The Swan-Canning black bream population are set to get a boost, with a new project set to increase numbers of one of their favourite food sources: the black pygmy mussel. Black pygmy mussels are a crucial food source for bream and when their diet is rich in this specific shellfish it leads to bigger, stronger, healthier populations of this famous Australian fish that recreational anglers love to catch. By restoring these valuable mussel beds, a more complex and robust aquatic habitat will be created which will result in greater black bream stocks.
Tackle Loop is OzFish’s solution to provide a home for recreational fishers’ old, unwanted, and broken gear. Working with our partners, we will take in old and discarded gear before ensuring it is recycled instead of polluting Australia’s waterways or ending up in landfill.
