Building on the success of 2021’s activity, volunteers from our Barossa Chapter spearheaded the installation of further habitat structures. At six locations across the reservoir, with support from SA Water’s local team, they deployed fish homes made of large eucalyptus logs, brush piles and limestone blocks.

In a first-of-its-kind initiative for South Australia, OzFish partnered with SA Water to introduce native fish homes in an off-line Government reservoir. These homes will provide shelter for the iconic Murray Cod. OzFish Barossa Chapter volunteers have been busy working to install terracotta pots and limestone blocks to form more habitat for Murray cod and other fish. Two large terracotta pots donated by Bennetts Pottery Magill with concreted bases were installed as a trial, then a trailer load of limestone blocks were donated by RecFish, washed and decontaminated at the Chamings property with OzFish volunteers doing the heavy lifting and cleaning, then installed into the reservoir by chapter members with Aquatic Biosecurity Pty Ltd’s commercial vessel Orca.

Since 2021, we’ve been working with SA Water to deliver complex habitat structures for Murray cod and other native species in Warren Reservoir. The project was a first-of-its-kind in the state, and we have been building on its success. The activity is driven by our Barossa Chapter.

Tackle Loop

Tackle Loop

Tackle Loop is OzFish’s solution to provide a home for recreational fishers’ old, unwanted, and broken gear. Working with our partners, we will take in old and discarded gear before ensuring it is recycled instead of polluting Australia’s waterways or ending up in landfill.
