OzFish alongside Northern Slopes Landcare, Traditional Owners, recreational fishers and Moree Urban Landcare worked to rehabilitate Moree’s fish habitats on the Gwydir River. Using the River Repair Bus program based at Moree, OzFish led restoration works across three sites surrounding the community of Moree and the Gwydir River.

OzFish have partnered with key volunteer groups and landholders to undertake fish habitat restoration works at the confluence of Washpool creek and Tenterfield Creek. The works will consist of installing riparian fencing over a 2km stretch which will protect the riparian revegetation, planting 1,500 endemic native plants and undertaking extensive weed control.

OzFish Unlimited worked to support a number of eel-tailed freshwater catfish thanks to a project with the Deniliquin Kolety Lagoons Landcare Group, Joint Indigenous Group, NSW DPI Fisheries, Murray Local Land Services, Edward Wakool Anglers Association, and the Edward Kolety Fishing Challenge.

OzFish Unlimited worked to support native fish in the Darling River, thanks to a productive carp muster day. OzFish Unlimited, NSW DPI Fisheries and Landcare NSW ran a free fishing event at Menindee, NSW. This community based event featured prizes, raffles, and a free lunch for those who registered to protect our waterways from the ravages of this invasive species.

OzFish is removing invasive weeds from Oolong Creek as part of efforts to protect one of the few remaining known populations of Southern pygmy perch in NSW.

The project is part of OzFish’s Driving Fish Habitat Action partnership with Landcare NSW, in collaboration with Dalton Community Association, NSW DPI Fisheries, and renowned researcher Mark Lintermans, with funding support from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust, the Australian Government through the CRC Program, and BCF – Boating, Camping, Fishing.

Extreme flooding has resulted in hypoxic blackwater events which is having a devastating effect on fish and freshwater crayfish along the Murray River and its tributaries in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. OzFish have been working alongside authorities to deploy our Fish Emergency Recovery Team to save as many affected fish as possible.

Tenterfield Creek, NSW

Tenterfield Creek, NSW

At the end of 2019, bushfires ravaged the Tenterfield area and a following rain event saw chemical, ash and sediment impact the water quality of Tenterfield Creek damaging the habitat of the southern purple spotted gudgeon. OzFish Unlimited and Landcare Australia got together through the Restoring Fish Habitat in Bushfire Affected Areas project to return this precious habitat and water quality issue back to a healthy functioning ecosystem.

Fish habitat in the Gywdir, Mehi and surrounding waterways will have the support of an OzFish River Repair Bus based in Moree. The River Repair Buses are a truly unique initiative that will undertake weekly activities together with volunteers, landholders, Landcarers and traditional owners to collect rubbish, undertake weed removal, revegetate waterways, and improve instream habitat across the region.
